Sometimes I get upset that my husband doesn't like to talk much. I am definitely the type that loves to sit around and chat. Chat about anything. Light and heavy topics. And when I first got married, I viewed my relationship being like my parents (I think we all do that to some extent.) And in my parents relationship, my dad loves to talk. My dad and I would stay up late to talk about the gospel, our lives, the stars, or anything. I never even considered being in a relationship where my husband simply doesn't like to talk much.
Okay, don't get me wrong. We talk. But there's not a whole lot of depth there. And maybe its because we have different interests. All in all, its been a struggle in my marriage to have meaningful conversations to a depth that I yearn for.
But recently, I saw things in a different light.
We sat in a combined relief society and priesthood meeting. I began to wish my husband talked more, commented more in class or was more like ME.
But after the lesson was over, he jumped up and started putting away the tons of chairs that our ward was sitting in and needed to be put away. I went to get our daughter from nursery and went back to find him. I couldnt find him so I started walking around. And there he was. In a whole other room of chairs with just 2 other guys putting those chairs away too.
And I began to see.
I saw the many times he has helped clean up after church activities. I saw whan people were moving and he willingly volunteered to help them move. He showed up and worked hard until the job was done. Late at night or even early on a Saturday morning. I saw him sign up to bring a man in need of dialysis to the hospital each week because he couldn't drive himself. I saw him offering our tools and things to neighbors in need. Everyone is a neighbor to my husband. I saw him waking up early on Saturday morning to make our family pancakes and clean our apartment before going to school to study extra on his "day off". I saw him get ready and help get our children get ready for church each week without question. And stay for all his meetings. I saw him volunteer to go to campouts whenever he is needed. I saw him answer a phone call and jump in the car to go help a friend whose car broke down and is needing help. I saw him drive strangers without a car somewhere they needed to go. I saw him pay for the persons meal behind us in the drive thru. I saw him studying hard for school and never being late for class so that our family will have a future. I saw him reading his scriptures in the morning. I saw him kneeling to pray every night before bed. I saw him attending the temple.
And then this scripture came into my mind:
But Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers (or speakers) only, deceiving your own selves." John 1:22
My husband is not a hearer (or sayer) alone. He is a DOER. And that is living the heart of the gospel. And I love him even more for that.
On top of all that. He never complains. Never.
He tries to be happy all the time. And he carries so much peace and calm with him wherever he goes. He is solid. Sturdy. Patient. Kind.
I loved him when we got married. I love him even more now. And I'm excited to see the kind of man God turns him into as the years go by. Because a good man can only become great.

Brody's Birth Story
I had not been nervous with this pregnancy. When I was pregnant with Reece, I was so anxious and nervous all the time. Mainly thinking about delivery and then caring for a newborn. I was blessed this time around to not be anxious until about 2 weeks prior to my due date. I had one major panic attack and got a blessing from Malcolm.
On April 30th at 12:30am, I started
having real contractions. The kind that feel like someones stabbing you in the abdomen with a butter knife. (Gross, I know. But.. seriously. They hurt.) They started about 15 minutes
apart and kept getting closer together over the next few hours until I was 2 to
5 minutes apart. I got in the bathtub at our apartment to ease the
pain/pressure. And then I started throwing up. Each and every contraction made me want to vomit. I remember thinking that was so cruel! Not only was I dealing with the contractions but wanting to (and actually) hurling every 5 minutes. Then, around 3:00, I felt like it was time to go to the
hospital. My contractions were staying consistently close together. Malcolm
went to pick up Christie and she slept on our couch while Reece was asleep in
her crib.
My
Midwife, Marie Horne, wanted me to walk around and keep moving before getting
in the Jacuzzi tub. She said sometimes, at this stage, the Jacuzzi will slow
down your contractions and you could get “stuck” at a certain point. So, we
walked around a little and an hour later (about 5:30am) I was at a 7. Then, at
that point, she talked us into breaking my water. I felt like I was far enough
along that it was okay and Brody was in the right position for delivery. (With
Reece, we broke my water when I was barely a 4 and her delivery was
looooooong- and I pushed for 3 hours. I considered breaking my water so early as
having something to do with her being posterior but I don’t know.) I just didn't want that same experience with Brody so I tried to wait it out as long as possible.
Eventually, we decided to go ahead and do it. We
broke my water at a 7 and things got REALLY intense after that. I was able to
manage the pain up until that point with breathing, pressure on my lower back,
leaning against something, or sitting in the tub. But after my water broke, NONE of those things helped. I didn't want anyone to touch me. All I wanted was “counter pressure” or something to pull
against so I pulled against Malcolm’s clothes and arms. Which is kind of funny because Malcolm's pet peeve is having his shirts stretched out. And I stretched his shirt out to the MAX. I wonder now what he
thought about that!
Here's where things get good!! I remember feeling “pressure” like what women talk about
when they need to push but I did not realize that I was anywhere close to the
pushing stage. Wasn't I just at a 7? So, in order to manage the pain, I asked Marie if we could try
getting back in the tub. I got in the tub and remember telling Malcolm that
when this next contraction came, I’d want him to pull against so I grabbed his
arms and pulled to counteract the pain I was feeling. Then, to everyone’s (including my) surprise, Brody was COMING! Coming, like NOW. And that's exactly what I screamed. “He’s coming, he’s coming, right now!” Everyone kind of said “Uh huh,
yeah, you’re in labor.” But when Marie looked and actually saw that I wasn't messing around (Brody's head was crowning) she pushed the emergency button and called for the nurses help.
I remember her yelling at Malcolm, “Pull her out of the tub and set her on the chair!” (The
Jacuzzi tub is not meant for laboring in, just managing pain.) So Malcolm
pulled me up out of the water and set me down on a small fold up chair next to the jacuzzi and by the time I
was in the chair, the baby was birthed. So, I pretty much birthed a baby in
the air while being transferred to the chair from the tub.) Malcolm was just
grateful to not get any blood on his shoes. HAH! Yes, that was the first thing he said to me after Brody was born. Not "Wow, good job, honey" or even "I'm so glad that's over" Just, "Is there blood on my shoes?! (looks down at his shoes) No, Pheeeewww, Okay."
It was really exciting. And the whole time "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac was playing on my phone. I will always have this memory when I hear that song!
I looked at Malcolm. I had so much going on inside my mind and heart. But all I could think to say was, "He is SO cute." And Malcolm responded with, "Yeah, he kind of looks like a potato."
Marie asked me later,
“Did you feel any pressure, did you know at all how close you were??” I said, I
remember feeling pressure, almost like a bowel movement but I had NO
idea how close I was!” I said I basically had to push ONE TIME. And she
corrected me saying, "No, you never pushed. He was coming anyway!"
Those
next couple days in the hospital where it was just Brody and I were very sweet.
It was just me and my little man. He took on to nursing very quickly. He could
also go longer stretches (about 3 hours in between feedings) instead of the 2
hours around the clock many newborns do. Although sleep deprived, sore, just
physically/ mentally exhausted, I really enjoyed that time with him.

I had felt a desire to go natural in this
delivery. My main reasoning was for a quicker recovery. Compared to my recovery
with Reece, it has been SO much better. I almost felt 100% at 2 weeks PP. I needed a quick recovery since I moved across states the same month I delivered a
baby. It’s been a huge blessing. And my delivery was quick (which I prayed for)
enabling me to do it naturally. Heavenly Father answers prayers.

Reece Avory Hall
The Birth Story
Earlier in my pregnancy, I had experienced a lot of anxiety with the idea of going through labor and delivery (shout out to those who shared their horror stories with me). After a lot of prayer, my guess date approached, and I had a feeling like everything would work out perfectly. My guess date was Wednesday, March 12th. I felt very excited and also a little nervous that the time would be soon.
Starting Wednesday night (on my guess date: good job doctor!), around 7:00, I started feeling some pain in my back and lower abdomen -which I now know were contractions. They would last about 30 seconds and would be 10-12 minutes apart. I was confused about what I was feeling because I never felt the "tightening" in my stomach like women talk about or the movies show. But they hurt enough to keep me from falling asleep and I had to breathe through the pain. I felt as though I was being stabbed in my lower abdomen. I couldn't do anything to make the pain subside.
Because sleep wasn't an option, I came out to the living room in hopes that a movie would keep me distracted. I didn't want to experience this on my own so I woke up Malcolm and asked him to stay up with me. He willingly came out to the living room and we watched "Wreck it Ralph"! Well, I didn't really watch it but breathed through contractions and caught at least my favorite part of the movie: the laffy taffy scene (Sha, la, la la la la la). The pain was between 7 and 15 minutes apart and lasted for 45 seconds to 1 minute. I still never felt any "tightening" in my stomach. Just the stabbing in my abdomen and back. It seriously felt like someone was stabbing me with a dull butter knife in my lower abdomen every 10 minutes. I pray I never truly find out what that would feel like but I imagine it was similar to my experience. I wonder if someone's ever died that way? It's gotta be on the "100 worst ways to die" list.
Okay, back to my story...
Malcolm had to get some sleep before going to school so I allowed him to sleep a few hours and I also tried to. The time came for him to go to class and I spent the day at home. The pain continued at 10-15 minutes apart and 1 minute a piece for the entire day. I could not focus on homework. But lets be serious, even if I didn't have contractions, I probably wouldn't be doing homework on my guess date. I would have been too excited that the time was getting close.) I was very excited that Reece could be coming soon but also confused on if what I was feeling was actually labor.
I remember getting an energy boost sometime in that day and getting up to clean the apartment. When the contraction came, I would kneel down and breathe through it. After it left, I would continue cleaning. The contractions were beginning to hurt more but I still never felt the "tightening". I anxiously looked forward to when Malcolm would get home so I didn't have to go through it alone. I felt as though I should ask him to skip his last class of the day and come home sooner instead.
When he got home, I felt like I could take a walk around the block. As we walked, I would have to stop when the pain came and lean on him. We walked around the blocks a few times and the contractions were about 6 minutes apart and lasting at least a minute. Still no tightening. Was this really what labor felt like or was I fooling myself? After about an hour of this, we decided it wouldn't hurt to go to the hospital and get checked.
After changing into a lovely hospital gown, getting hooked up to monitors, and answering a million questions, they discovered I was at a four. A four?! Oh boy, did I have a long way to go still. But now I knew for sure that this was labor. They told us to walk around the hospital for an hour and come back to get checked. I continued to have the stabbing pain in my abdomen and back but no tightening in my stomach. I leaned on Malcolm for support when the pain came and then walked when it went away.
After returning to get checked, my contractions were closer together and I was at a 5. They admitted us. I had no idea what to expect. I had never done this before. I started to get pretty anxious. After calling Dr. Codd, he suggested that we break my water to get the process going faster. I did not have a "birth plan" so after discussing it with Malcolm, we decided that would be okay. I still did not feel like I HAD to get the epidural but they told me I would probably progress pretty quickly so I could get the epidural now to be prepared. I decided on the epidural.
The guy came in to administer the epidural. He was funny and witty. He explained to Malcolm everything he was doing and let Malcolm watch it all. At one point, when trying to put the needle in, he had to "wiggle it around" because my back was so tough. Malcolm started breathing with me. I thought he was trying to help me get through the contraction. But he was actually trying not to pass out from the epidural! The long needle being wiggled into my back really got to him! I remember the nurse asking if he was okay :) He started getting "the look" but never completely passed out.
The epidural is a gift from heaven. I felt complete relief and was able to lay in the bed and watch Friends and at least relax a little. Because I was feeling so good, Malcolm decided to take a nap. At this point, it was around 10 pm and neither of us had slept much the night before so we were both really tired. The nurse had given me a barf bag since the epidural can make your blood pressure drop and cause nausea to set it. Around 11, I felt like I was going to throw up. Where did that barf bag go? I couldn't find it anywhere! I was going to throw up any second. Malcolm! Malcolm's asleep. I couldn't feel my legs to stand up! Nurse! I pushed the button for her to come. "What can I help you with?" Was the response to the button. "I need a barf bag!" She came running in right as it all came up. Luckily, I was able to hold it in my mouth until she got the bag there. And she showed me where my barf bag had fell to the ground beside my bed. She thanked me for holding it in. Aren't you glad I shared this part with you?
I couldn't sleep, even with the epidural. I was so anxious to see our baby. I was also so concerned that Reece's heart beat was okay. I watched the monitors the whole time. Her heart beat was steady and was not affected by the epidural but I couldn't stop watching it to make sure. I could also see my contractions on the monitor. They had been getting stronger and closer together for the past hour but now, they were very small and far apart. Was I digressing? I had made so much progress and now my body didn't know what to do. I thought for sure they would have to give me petocin to help the process go faster or worst case scenario, I would need an C-section because my body didn't know how to do labor. I could see on the monitor that my contractions were very small.
The nurse came in to check on me. I commented that I noticed my contractions slowing down and being so far apart. "OH, the monitor just slipped off. And actually, you are fully dilated and ready to push!" I guess my body knew what to do after all. I went from a 5 to a 10 in 2 hours. And ready to push? I became very excited that it was almost time to see our baby! "But nurse? Can you wake up my husband?"
He jumped up right as she said I was ready to push. I began pushing with every contraction. Every few minutes a contraction would come and I would push for 8 seconds, 3 times a piece with each contraction. That's 24 seconds a contraction. And...8 constant minutes of pushing an hour. I pushed for three hours so that calls for 24 minutes of continual pushing. I kept getting in trouble for breathing instead of holding my breath when I pushed. I felt better when I breathed so did my own thing. I figured I needed oxygen up to this point in my life so why stop now? :) I understand the nurse was just trying to help though.
I was making slow progress and getting pretty tired. After 2 1/2 hours, they saw how tired I was and that Reece was not moving very much. They suggested that we use a vacuum or forceps to get her out. They wanted me to save the little energy I had left for using one of those means. I didn't want to do it. There was no way I wanted someone putting a vacuum on her head and pulling her out. Wasn't this experience already stressful enough for her? I asked if we try another position instead. We tried. Still no progress. That was a very difficult decision to make. But I knew if we didn't do something, the process could end in a C-section.
As the doctor felt for her head, I saw his face drop. No wonder why Reece was taking so long, she was in the wrong position. She was coming face up! How had no one known this? Everyone was surprised. The doctor and nurse congratulated me on pushing Reece down as far as she was. "Not many people can get a face-up baby down this far- you're doing great!" I started to not feel so wimpy after hearing this.
We decided on the vacuum. I was very nervous about this. The doctor comforted me saying that the only risks would be some bruising that would go away within the first week. They would try to suction 3 times and if it "popped off" each time, they wouldn't try anymore. In that case, it would most likely be a C-section. I pushed and the vacuum pulled. It popped off once.
I felt as though my epidural had worn off plenty. They had let it wear off so I could push better. I could feel my legs almost completely. The pain became unbearable. I could not think. I could not hear anyone around me. I was in a different realm. The pain had taken me somewhere else. But I was still supposed to push. I traveled to a part of my mind that I did not know was there and gave one last push.
My first thought/feeling was instant relief. Then, all my attention was on this baby girl. She was placed directly on my chest and I fell in love. I tried calming her with my voice. She seemed very frightened. She had a hard time catching her breath, was frantically looking around the room, and had a fearful cry. She did not calm down after a few minutes so they took her to make sure she was breathing okay. They brought her back and I was able to talk/hold her again.
My heart breaks when I think about how scared this little girl was when she first entered the world. It's no wonder why she slept for 2 days after she was born. I know the birth experience will be stressful for babies to some degree no matter how the birth goes but if I could change what happened, I would have let my body progress on it's own (instead of breaking my water) and let things happen more naturally. I think we rushed her too much and she went through more stress than what was necessary.
Since then, I have fallen in love with her even more. I have felt such a special spirit as we have brought this little one into our home. She has already brought great joy into our lives with her happy attitude. I would go through labor a million times again to get my Reece baby.
This is just the beginning.

Wilbur the Cat.
(Loni tucking Wilbur in with a pillow, blanket, and music box)
His name was Wilbur. He was the perfect feline friend. He was the runt of his family. He was the smallest and most gentle of his brothers and sisters. He had white fur with large grey/black spots. He had a pink nose and very friendly eyes. Wilbur was a special cat because he was handicapped. He lost all of his whiskers and had no balance! He could not jump from the couch to the ground without falling over. He also got his claws stuck in things. One time, my family and I went on vacation. After a week, we returned home to find Wilbur, crying with his nail stuck underneath the dish washer! Who knows how long he was there. Maybe the whole week!
One time, when we were on vacation again, we returned and listened to all of our voicemails on the home phone. Wilbur had left us a message! He was "meowing and meowing" over and over into the phone. I think he was telling us to "come home!" He really missed us when we were gone and I really missed him.
Wilbur loved to play barbies with me. I had this pink barbie convertible that I would put Wilbur in and drive him around. He loved it! He would hang over the side and paw at the wheels as they went around and around. He sat in there until I took him out.
Wilbur could also do flips. I would sit down and hold wilbur with his back against my thighs. As I slowly moved my legs apart, he would reach his arms above his head and touch the ground and flip over backwards. We used to do that over and over again.
I remember Wilbur hiding in my closet a lot. He loved to cuddle up anywhere he could. He always rode around on mom's shoulder like this so he could see everything going on. Wilbur was one of my best friends. He loved me, and I loved him. I cried and cried the day he was gone. We had some poisonous car fluids in the garage one day. I guess this kind of fluid animals love because it tastes sweet. For almost 4 days I tried searching for Wilbur. I ran around the house, searched through the woods, looked in every nook and cranny I could and in every place where he could get his nails stuck. Wilbur ALWAYS came when I called for him, but this time he didn't come. On the fourth day, I went out back to try to look once again and I heard this tiny 'meow' from behind me. He had been nestled in between our big blue water barrels. He looked so pitiful. He had lost weight and could not stop shivering. It took all he had to give out one tiny 'meow'. I instantly brought him inside and bundled him in a blanket. His body was so weak. I tried to give him food and water but he wouldn't take anything. He kept throwing up. My parents decided to take him to the emergency vet. They tried what they could but he didn't make it. He was too sick. When I heard the news about my best friend, I ran into my room and cried and cried. Jamee and her friend Sydney were there to comfort me and hug me but the news was devastating.
I remember mom and dad telling me stories about how cats go to heaven and get to chase mice all day long. They are never sick and they just get to play all day. They told me how Wilbur would be waiting for me to get there so he could see me again! This made me feel better...but still miss him.
Dad helped me make a grave for Wilbur and it still sits behind our house in Morristown, Tennessee on Sussex Lane at the top of the hill, on the edge of the woods. I made it myself.
Through this experience, I learned how lucky I am to have an understanding of what happens after we die. I look forward to one day being able to see many family members, friends, and felines on the other side :)

Loni's Losing Her Lumpy Love-Handles!!
Malcolm and I made a deal with each other that we would not be that typical newlywed couple who gains 20 lbs of fat the first year of marriage. And guess what? We lost. Well, I lost. I have always been up and down with my weight EVER SINCE MIDDLE SCHOOL. I have tried a lot of different ways to lose weight. Some healthy and some not so much. As this is a struggle for many people I know...I have decided to SUCK IT UP. Yes, I said it. Physically and mentally. What are we supposed to do when we want something so bad? GET IT! Over the next 4 months, I expect to lose FAT, gain MUSCLE, TONE-UP and work out the most important muscle in the body, MY HEART. Since I need help in achieving this goal, I ask my friends and family from blogspot to follow my progress and get motivated to make your own changes! Is there anything you HAVE to do? NO! Just follow this progress with me! To start- I have some stats and pictures and goals.
Day 1.
Weight: 157 lbs.
NECK: 13 in.
ARMS: 12 in.
LOWER ABDOMINAL ( largest part) : 33 1/4 in.
HIPS: 42 in.
THIGH: 23 1/2 in.
CALF: 14 in.
KNEE: 16 1/4 in. ( I know, weird place to measure, but I have knee fat which I wish to lose! :)
GOAL #1: I know my body. And my body does not like sugar. On the other hand, my mind LOVES sugar and thinks it needs sugar every day. This might seem over the top, but the best thing for ME is to stop eating it. This includes candy, cakes, pastries, pies, ice-cream or anything you would consider a 'treat' with high simple sugars. I will continue to eat fruits and whole wheat bread with carbohydrates.
GOAL #2: I feel awesome when I work out consistently! I will go to the gym 4 days a week. These days will be MON, WED, FRI, and SAT. from 7am-7:40am. I will be doing circuit training- between weight lifting and a stationary bike. On Sat- I will be doing more cardio than weight lifting. TUES and THURS will be stay home with yoga days where I will not use weights but only my own body weight for toning up. This will also include stretching.
GOAL #3: I will be drinking only water and LOTS OF IT. Because water is probably the most important ingredient in getting fit, I decided that I will fill my large water bottle up 3 times a day.
There will be more goals in the future.
NOTE: this workout plan and goal list is specifically critiqued to my own personal body. Everyone is different and we all need different things. Listen to your own body and find what makes YOU feel good!

Our Adventure CLeaning the I-Center
The I-Center is an auditorium almost as big as the Conference Center in SLC. It is used for BYU-Idaho's devotional every Tuesday afternoon ( Elder Cook spoke last week!) and used for choir and band performances. Like I said, it looks a lot like the Conference Center which means it's REALLY BIG. This also means it takes a lot of people to clean it! So, every so often, our stake is asked for volunteers to clean it on a night during the week. We were able to go this past week and take some fun pics with the 'Ghost Buster' Vacuums! I could not even try to guess how many seats are in this auditorium! You can kind of see what I mean by looking at some of these pics. In order to clean this place, every seat needs to be vacuumed along with the carpet and everything wiped down and dusted. Usually it takes around 4 hours, depending on how many people volunteer. Before we started, a Sister Missionary wanted to share with us a message. She said that President Hinckley had prophesied that there should be no worry about WHO would clean this magnificent auditorium but that the STUDENTS would always volunteer. Isn't that cool?? And that is what happens...every week the students volunteer to clean it. And now you know :)
